How your generosity kept Richard and Cloud united until the end.
Richard and Cloud were a dynamic duo that visited the Guest House for years. Richard, a 64-year-old retired Army Ranger, lived alone on a reservation hundreds of miles from Reno. His fluffy American Eskimo mix, Cloud, was his source of companionship, helping ease the isolation that commonly afflicts veterans living in rural communities. Together, they traveled five hours one way for Richard to receive care.
The distance may have been far, but it’s care he could not do without. Richard’s doctor discovered he had lung cancer as they prepared for open-heart surgery. The surgery was immediately canceled, and aggressive chemotherapy began. The cancer quickly spread causing his condition to deteriorate. When he returned for his last round of treatment, Richard knew a long hospital stay was imminent—but what troubled him most was Cloud. What would happen to his beloved friend if he was no longer around to care for him?
During his time at VGH, Richard met Sal. Sal promised to care for Cloud regardless of the outcome. As Richard battled cancer and the effects of his treatment, the moments spent with his faithful companion became a cherished gift made possible by Sal’s kind heart. Richard ultimately lost his battle with cancer, but his dying wish was granted—because of you, Cloud found a loving home.
Today, Cloud visits the Guest House with his new guardian, Sal. Your support ensures veterans and their furry companions can remain united and find comfort in each other when facing medical uncertainty.
