The Guest House was founded in the early 1990s when two Reno veterans, Chuck Fulkerson and Dick Rhyno, and others, realized that veterans and family members were sleeping in their cars while visiting the local Veterans Administration Medical Center. An example of this was a woman from Bishop, Calif. who spent the night in her car with her children. The veteran husband/father was in the hospital intensive care unit. She did not know anyone in the Reno/Sparks area who could help with lodging and did not have the financial means to stay in a local motel. Thus began a credo that “never again on our watch” would veterans and their families be without a safe, warm and clean place to stay.
Working with supporters, the non-profit Veterans Hospital Foundation was established in 1991. In 1994 a small home was opened, which was affectionately referred to as the “Spouse House.” By 1998 this home provided five beds for veterans and their families. In 2002, the name was changed to Veterans Guest House to reflect that our veterans were in as much need of support as their families. On Veterans Day, November 11, 2004, a new 4700sq. ft. three- story home was dedicated. It currently accommodates 12 guests. As the need for expansion continued, the Guest House purchased and refurbished the duplex next door adding five additional beds. This has brought the total number of guests that can be accommodated to 17. Since 2004, the Guest House provided nearly 60,000 guest nights of lodging to veterans and their families. The original “Spouse House ” provided close to 10,000 nights of lodging, bringing the total to over 70, 000 veterans and family members served.
The need continues to grow as more of our veterans and their families need medical treatment. With the more recent military actions, i.e. Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the ongoing military service, the Guest House will be needed for years to come. The Guest House Board has approved a new expansion which will allow us to nearly double in size. Visit the Capital Campaign page for more information. We expect to start construction in the spring of 2017.
The Guest House is a Nevada non-profit corporation 501(c)(3)and is not affiliated with the Veterans Hospital or the Veterans Administration. Guests are encouraged to donate to help defray our operational costs, but no one is refused lodging for lack of funds. The Veterans Guest House is funded through the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations. No government funds from Federal entities or the states of Nevada and California are used for the day-to-day operations of the Guest House.

We brought home all the info with us. Thanks again for all you do for Veterans and their families.”

“Thanks so much for opening your hearts and home. This House is filled with amazing, wonderful, heartfelt people. I didn’t think I would ever meet and make so many new friends. By taking care of me, you also helped take care of my Dad, and for that, I will always be grateful. I will miss seeing everyone – my 3 ½ month stay felt like being at home. You are all awesome people. God Bless.”
“Let me start by saying this house and the concept is amazing. The people who make everything run and work together are great! I stayed here a few times while my grandfather was in the hospital. My Mom was able to be with him the entire time. This House became her second home.
Thank you for taking care of her too. The people who work here and the visitors are some of the most amazing people with some of the best backgrounds and stories. It is wonderful to be around so many people who care – you really feel loved and wanted. Thank you so much for the hospitality.”
“Thank you, thank you again for this wonderful port in a storm!”

“Words cannot express our heartfelt thanks for all that you do for your guests. You took my son and I in as though we were family during my brothers stay in ICU. Your location made it so easy to be with him day or night. He left us to be with the Lord. God Bless you all! We will never forget your kindness.”
“Our husband and Father passed away September 27th from a fall. We want to express our gratitude to the community and to all the staff at the Veterans Guest House for granting to us a home away from home. What a wonderful place of hope and light in dark days. Thank you again.”
“It is so wonderful to have people like you supporting our men and women who have served our country. Recently, the Guest House was a haven for a family who lost their brother. Two of the surviving brothers stated that the family was only able to see their brother in his last days and attend his military funeral together if the Guest House had been here to provide lodging for them. Your donation does make a difference. It helped supply a much-needed sanctuary for this family and many others. Thank you for your support.”
