What's Happening at the Guest House

There are many ways to be involved with the Guest House. We have two major fundraising events each year, our Annual Campaign and our Radio-thon. We also have a wonderful Adopt-A-Day program which we promote at our Veterans Day Celebration. Adopt-A-Day and the 880 Campaign are ongoing. We are also very blessed to have other organizations sponsoring events on our behalf. These have traditionally been motorcycle poker runs, golf tournaments, bowling tourneys and even a Turkey Shoot. We also have opportunities to work for wages at such things as the Rib Cook Off and the Air Races. Watch "Other Events" and our newsletters for upcoming events and how to get involved.

Radiothon

On Saturday March 5, 2011, News Talk 780 KOH broadcasted live from the Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno for the Veterans Guest House eighth annual Radiothon on. The Radiothon raised nearly $35,000 from community members and donors who showed their support for this one-of-a-kind home, which provides temporary housing for veterans and their families while undergoing medical treatment in the area.

We'll see you next year, the first weekend in March 2012, for our next Radiothon!

Adopt a Day

What better way to remember a veteran or some one special in your life! For $100 you can adopt-a-day at the Guest House. You can do this in honor or memory of someone. A certificate hangs in the house on the day(s) that are adopted. The $100 helps to underwrite a small portion of the costs of running the house for a day.

880 Campaign

In 2006, the 880 Club was formed. This was an effort to find donors who would help pay off the $725,000 debt that encumbered the new house. Donors were asked to donate $880 (our address) or what they wanted. The money was restricted to paying off the mortgage. On December 31, 2009, with the help of some wonderful individuals, veteran and service groups and private foundations that mortgage was retired. We are so very thankful to all of those individuals. Special recognition must be given to the EWB Fund at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada and to the Charles N. Mathewson Charitable Lead Trusts who together retired over half of the outstanding debt.

The Veterans Guest House board has now established a Building Fund. Donations may be restricted to assist with capital expenditures needed to maintain or improve the existing home over the years or with expenditure for refurbishment or construction of future expansions. The Guest House purchased the duplex immediately adjacent to the existing home (to the east on Taylor) in September 2010. This property will be refurbished during the first part of 2011. Within the next five years, this property will be replaced with a facility that is comparable to the one that currently occupied. The need for services continues to grow and with the doubling of outpatient visits by the VAMC over the next 8-10 years, the need for the Guest House will definitely increase.

Motorcycle Poker Run

All motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to participate in the Motorcycle Poker Run on Saturday, June 25, 2011. Riders accumulate one playing card at five locations throughout the area and the best hand wins at the end of the ride. All funds benefit the Veterans Guest House, which provides temporary housing for veterans and their families while undergoing medical treatment in the area. Salute and Support

Salute and Support is the theme for the Veterans Guest House fall fundraising effort, running through Saturday, Dec. 10. With the purchase of a $100 raffle ticket, donors get a chance to win either a $7,500 grand prize or one of five $500 prizes. Only 500 tickets will be sold to improve the odds.Click to read more.
